Due to adverse road conditions in the winter months, cleaning and protecting the body and chassis of a car should not be neglected, especially when it is a classic car that we want to keep in good condition for several years. The older the car, the more it is exposed to rust.
Cleaning and maintenance of the bodywork
As humidity favors the appearance of rust, it is particularly important to clean the body and chassis of your classic car properly and regularly, especially if it is used in winter. Washing, with specific products designed for vintage cars, must be done by hand, which allows you to fetch dirt in every corner (automatic washing can deteriorate an old paint). It is the best guarantee of longevity for your classic car. Pay particular attention to the wheel arches and the underbody.
Once the car is clean, you will apply a suitable polish to remove all traces of oxidation, before finishing with a protective product (wax).
To improve corrosion protection, care must be taken to add new grease to all grease fittings. Likewise, the door hinges and the hood latch should be sprayed with lithium grease. In the event of rust at an advanced stage, it is advisable to replace the affected part with a piece of healthy sheet metal, but to hope to obtain a good result, it is necessary to avoid operating in winter because of the humidity which prolongs the drying time of the products.
In a garage with a protective cover
Remember that it is important to drive regularly to keep your classic car in good condition. If, however, you do not plan to use it during the winter, after cleaning it, it is strongly recommended that you consider storing it in a heated and dust-free garage. The car will be covered with a suitable protective cover, not airtight, to prevent the formation of humidity. This cover will protect the car against any possible impacts and scratches. On the other hand, to take care of the tires, it is important to put the car on jack stands.
