Formula One back at Silverstone...

for the Silverstone Classic



Formula One at Silverstone is not over: fans who want to relive the spirit of original grand prix racing can look forward to original F1 cars from the golden era of the ‘60s and ‘70s, and historic Grand Prix cars from the ‘50s and early ‘60s, all competing at the Silverstone Classic weekend from 24 to 26 July.



Voice of Formula One Murray Walker will once again be at Silverstone to provide his inimitable wisdom and insight; former F1 drivers such as Sir Stirling Moss and Jackie Oliver will also be back behind the wheel.



The Grand Prix Masters’ grid includes cars first driven by heroes such as Niki Lauda and James Hunt, and includes the Williams FW06, Brabham BT42, Tyrrell 008 and examples from the Shadow, Arrows, Amon, Surtees and March teams. Local flavour will be added by three models from the Hesketh marque, originally built at Towcester near Silverstone.



An equally iconic Formula One grid from the romantic 1950s is comprised of front-engine models such as the Maserati A6GCM campaigned by Gonzales and Fangio in 1953, and a works Aston Martin DBR4 driven by Salvadori at Silverstone in 1959. Later and lighter rear-engine examples also join the grid, including the Cooper T51 raced by Stirling Moss and Maurice Trintignant in 1959.



The Silverstone Classic even offers a taste of Formula Junior, miniature single seater grand prix cars with big history: Elva 300s, a Gemini, Cooper T59, plus a Lotus 22 and a Lotus 27 both raced by Peter Arundell, the British Formula One Lotus racing driver who died earlier this month. There is even a front-engine Lola Mk2, which qualified for the 1964 Monaco F3 race despite competing with lighter and more sophisticated rear-engine cars, and was later found abandoned in the Malaya jungle!
